Some students would prefer a California high school that’s located in a place which would inspire them. Some choose to attend California fashion schools which are located near the sea or close to nature. From the scenery, a student can gain inspiration enough to produce a new work of couture art.

2) Affiliated or Independent – should you go with a California fashion school which is a part of a prestigious university, or should you go to one which stands on its own? There are cases when a California fashion school within a university is better since the name on your resume will help you get great jobs easier. However, there is also something to be said for an independent school which can hold its own against the big names.

One thing you should consider is the fact that in a big school, you are mostly paying for the name of the school and not for the quality of education. You are paying additional cash to have the name of the university on your resume. This would help you get a job easier.

The fashion world, however, rarely cares for the name of a university if it does not perform well. If you have the name of a great independent school on your list, you might find it easier to get a job.

3) Cost – there is also the cost to think about. California fashion schools cost money. There is no denying that fact. The question that remains is: “how much money should it cost you?”
There are, of course, schools which offer discounted tuition for various reasons. Some are suffering declines in enrollment. Some may just be starting their operation and are trying to break into the market. In opting for these schools, you could save a lot of cash. However, you should consider that you might be sacrificing quality for cost.

You could also consider going to schools which are more prestigious. These schools may ask you to pay a lot of cash in order to study there. However, you should remember that high cost doesn’t necessarily equal high quality. You need to realize that in some schools you will not be paying form an education but you will be paying for the name.

Would a Model Date a Photographer?

Would a model date one of her photographers? Was a thread I found on one of the modeling networks. Interestingly enough, some models have admitted dating a photographer. Some models even admitted marrying a photographer. I know some models who have married photographers, so I guess the answer to the question whether a model would date a photographer could be positive.

On the other hand, some models and photographers in the modeling forum said that for a model to date a photographer, the model has to be very self-confident. It takes a lot of courage, according to them to take a man who is always surrounded by other beautiful models due to his line of work. I have known some photographers whose girlfriends broke up with them because they were always jealous of the beautiful models that the photographer was working with. By the same token, I have also known some married couples whereas the husband was a fashion and beauty photographer, and the wife was not a model. But they got along just fine. So, I guess, it depends on the people. As long as there is no jealousy and insecurity it can work just fine.

What Does Gas Shortage Means For Aspiring Models?

Is there really gas shortage or is it just a set up to keep gas prices going through the roof? People all over the country complain about gas stations being closed due to lack of fuel. The areas affected the most are Atlanta, GA and Texas. Who would have thought that Texas would be affected by gas deficiency?

One model complained on a modeling forum that she had to stand in line for a half hour to fill up her gas tank. Another model in Texas said she had to wait at a gas station for four hours and when she finally got to the gas pump, all gas was out.

With the increasing prices of gas and it’s deficit the outlook for aspiring models who used to be able to travel for unpaid modeling assignments AKA TFP/TFCD (which stands for time for print, or time for CD with images) is less than optimistic. When an aspiring model, who is usually a student, begins her modeling career, she is often required to build a portfolio which she can present to potential commercial clients. TFCD is an excellent and known way to obtain portfolio pictures without paying highly priced photographers for professional portfolio-quality photographs. But paying an arm and a leg for gas to get to the photo studio almost doesn’t justify it.

That’s only a part of the problem. The current situation in the financial markets has affected the ability of the banks to lend money. What will happen to our student loans no one knows at this point. After rejection of the rescue bail out Government proposal by the lawmakers, there is a chance that aspiring models will have to shift their efforts from full-time schooling into the higher-paying adult industry.

Model Elaine's Florida Trip April 2008

If you have been checking my blog regularly, you probably noticed that I have not updated it in a while. In, I think I have not posted anything since March. The reasons are multiple.

In April 2008 I went on a two-week trip to St. Pete, Fl. I stayed with a talented photographer and an amazing friend Nic (Michael Nicoletti). This was my second trip to Florida since last year and I got an opportunity to see the other coast of the peninsula. It was a great trip and we (I and Nic) got some fantastic pictures featuring me and the beautiful scenery.

By the way, if you are model who is travelling to Florida, you should definitely shoot with Nic. He is an easy-going guy and a friend. And if you are looking for references, I will gladly provide them.

And here are some photos that I and Nic created during my trip. We shot mostly at the sunset when the colors are the most amazing and vivid, and the ocean ripple came out amazingly well in the rays of the descending sun. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Fortunately for me, my MetroPCS cell phone service was working in FL without roaming and I was able to enjoy unlimited text messaging privileges and phone calls which made it a lot more fun.

Another creative outlet that I picked up while in FL was photography. I have always been fascinated by photography and on this recent trip I was able to actually pick up the camera and take some test shoots. Now I am looking forward to learning more about photography and photo journalism.

About Model Open Calls

Open Calls entail modeling scouts meeting with aspiring models interested in a professional agency representation. Agency cannot guarantee that you will be offered a contract if you go to an Open Call. However, if you make an effort to attend an open call, you will have an opportunity to present yourself to a professional in the modeling industry. When a modeling scout meets you, they will make an assessment whether you have the right look for the type of clientele that the agency works with. If the agency is interested in offering you a contract, you will be contacted by a modeling agency representative at a later time. A modeling agency will usually get back with only those candidates whom they are interested in pursuing.

Remember, that a modeling agency does not usually encourage you to travel outside your area, as they have scouts who travel all over the country to conduct open calls. Modeling agencies hold events all over the country and you just need to keep your eyes open for future open calls coming to your area. As an alternative to attending an open call, you can submit photos of yourself online or via snail mail that will be viewed by modeling scouts.

If you have a portfolio, feel free to bring them to an Open Call you are attending, but this is usually not required. Pictures should give a good idea of what you really look like. Several types of images are a good way to show you from different perspectives. The types of images that you may want to submit include a face close-up with little to no makeup; a profile shot; a three-quarter shot; and a full-length photo of yourself in form-fitting clothing.

When you go to an open call, go easy on the makeup, as the modeling agency scouts want to see the “real” you.

Nude Modeling

As some of you may or many not know, I do quite a bit of Artistic Nude and Fine Art Nude Modeling. I have worked with fine artists and photographers on images for inclusion in fine art photography coffee table books and for sale through fine art galleries.

As I have mentioned in one of my previous posts, nude modeling and nude photography can generally be divided into the following areas: Artistic Nude, Fine Art Nude, and Glamour Nude. The purpose of the aforementioned types of photography is creation of art, or artistic images.

Adult Content photography is an extreme case of glamour nude, whereas sexual acts are either performed by one or more models in still images or video, or the content is intended for the sole purpose of sexual arousal of the viewer.

As Justice Potter Stewart tried to identify "hard-core" pornography back in 1964, by saying, "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced . . . but I know it when I see it . . . "[1]

Up until the present, the Supreme Court has been struggling to identify what speech is "obscene". More information can be found on findlaw.com but without getting to technical, here is what I call “artistic” photography.

Whether nude or non-nude, artistic nude or even implied nude generally is a celebration of a human form and an expressions of a human body in lighting and shadows. Lighting techniques are best tested in the case of nude modeling. Generally, the difference between artistic nude modeling and glamour nude modeling is in the purpose of the images. If the images are intended solely for the purpose of arousal of the viewer, they are considered glamour. If the intended use of the images is art, artistic presentation of the form, and or lighting techniques and the art of lighting, the images are considered artistic. Although not clearly defined, the difference between artistic and fine art nude if the lighting. What is the purpose of the image? If it is to show lighting art, I consider it to be fine art nude, rather then artistic. If the image conveys the mood, rather then focuses of particular lighting techniques, it is rather artistic, then fine art nude.

Although all of the following categories are considered nude modeling, there are several degrees of nude: Implied, Sheer or covered, Topless back or profile view, Bottomless back or profile view, Full back or profile view, Topless front view, Bottomless front view, Full front view.
